Performance
of Momentum at the Theatre Royal
The Wessex Youth Offending Team and Hampshire
County Council would like to invite you to come along to the Theatre
Royal to see a very special performance of Momentum.
Following on from the intensive three-week project and performance
at The Lights in Andover, we are really excited to present Momentum
for a second time in Winchester.
Before starting the three week project many of the young people had
little or no dance experience. This performance reflects the commitment
they made, the challenges they faced and their transformation into
an exceptional dance company.
Complimentary tickets are available from the Theatre Royal Box Office
on 01962 840 440 and, for more information about the event, please
email Clare Hobbs

Outcomes Framework for Culture and Sport
As you may be aware, IDeA on behalf of Arts Council England,
English Heritage, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, Sport
England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are currently
working on the development of an outcomes framework for culture and
sport.
A consultation draft of the proposed framework is attached.
This has been developed with the support of a reference group of local
authority and, other cultural and sport representatives, and it builds
on the research undertaken last year in the first stage of the project.
The arts council particularly want to get feedback from as many local
authorities as possible, but also welcome comments from other organisations
(private and not for profit) working in the cultural sector.
Responses should be sent to dany.louise@artscouncil.org.uk
by Friday 23 July (not 1 August as stated on the document).
The arts council recognises that this is a short timescale at a busy
time but things are moving rapidly and people who have been involved
to date very much feel the framework will assist them in the difficult
budget process so they are keen to progress this quickly. They also
recognise that the improvement architecture for local government will
be changing over the next few months as the coalition government confirms
its intentions, and the framework will of course need to be updated
and amended to reflect any changes as they occur.
This stage of the framework development is critical to ensure that
the approach IDeA is taking is going to be workable and helpful for
a wide audience. Once they have received the initial feedback they
will revise the framework and pilot it with a small number of authorities
in September, before producing a final version which will also be
accompanied by additional tools and guidance to support its use.
Southampton Film Week: Youth Film Festival (13 – 16

Southampton Film Week will again feature an enticing collection
of film events and activities, but this year, to add to the mix, City

Life in colour for Alzheimer’s sufferers in Winchester
and Eastleigh
An arts based project to support dementia sufferers in the
Winchester and Eastleigh areas will use costume based activities to
enable individuals to reminisce and share memories with their families.
Platform 4 today receives the only arts based award in this region
from the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities programme for
The Costume Connections Project.
Organisers from Platform 4 will expand on a successful pilot working
with members of three clubs run by the Alzheimer’s Society in
Winchester and Eastleigh. They focus on using art and drama, which
has been proved to prompt memories that will help enrich the individuals’
lives as well as those of their families.
Workshops will take place at the Connections Club, Memory Cafe and
a newly formed men’s club taking inspiration from people’s
favourite clothes, dance and drama to unlock memories through artwork
which they can look back at or share with close family and friends.
The workshops will involve local young artists and post-graduates
who will be able to gain valuable experience working with older generations
and discover how they can bring enjoyment to and help improve the
lives of people with other needs.
The project will culminate in a week-long event at Eastleigh’s
The Points Art Centre and use empty shop windows to display the creativity
of people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and promote to others
the benefits of getting involved with Project 4’s clubs for
people who have the disease.
Workshops are on-going throughout 2010 – 2011 and will culminate
during a week in November 2011 at The Point in Eastleigh.
Throughout the week-long event documentary films involving participants
will also be shown and a book published including stories and artistic
impressions from project participants.
Catherine Church, Artistic Director Platform 4 said: I am delighted
with this news, it enables Platform 4 artists to extend our very special
collaborative work for people with early onset dementia and their
supporters. This Costume Connections Project will celebrate the participants’
unique stories through installation, film, dance and live art.Through
our final celebratory events we can give them a tailor made arts experience
and some respite from what is a devastating disease. Thank you.
Alison Rowe, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region said: Platform
4 has developed an innovative way of helping support individuals to
continue to enjoy memories and connect with loved ones during very
difficult periods in their lives. We are delighted to help fund a
project which will keep families connected and draw out family stories
which can be remembered by future generations.
Platform 4 aims to create magical performance work that is highly
visual and will captivate and involve audiences. Our programme of
work seeks to enrich its audience, particularly young and old people,
through beautiful, quality arts experiences and unique cross-arts
participatory projects.
Platform 4 gratefully acknowledges support from Arts Council South
East, Big Lottery Fund, Winchester City Council and University of
Winchester.

One Big Table – Winchester’s big lunch event at Abbey
Gardens
Delicious food from around the world,
live music and dance is all on the menu at Winchester’s Big
Lunch event on Sunday 18 July in Abbey Gardens, next to the Guildhall.
For only £2 per three-portion serving, guests will be able to
enjoy authentic Indian, Chinese, Thai, Nepalese, Philippine and African
dishes prepared by the city’s varied restaurants and community
groups so your place at One Big Table! For everyone’s entertainment
there will be steel drums, story-telling for the whole family, traditional
dance from Nepal, Thailand and China – including lion dancing
– plus music from around the world. Entry and entertainment
is free and everyone is welcome! There is, however, a charge if you
wish to have food from the various cuisines on offer. Here’s
how it works: you purchase a ticket, which entitles you to a three-portion
serving from one of the six national cuisines. Each ticket costs £2
and portions are small enough so if you want to try dishes from another
nationality you pay for another ticket and try another country. For
£12 you can try all six nationalities – if you can handle
it! Councillor Richard Izard, Mayor of Winchester, will be launching
this fun family event. If the weather is bad, the event will move
across the Broadway to St. John’s House. One Big Table is a
local version of The Big Lunch and has the aim of bringing together
and celebrating the increasingly diverse cultural communities in Winchester.
One Big Table has been devised by Winchester’s ethnic minority
groups including CultureNet and Footsteps, working in partnership
with Winchester City Council’s Arts Service, Hampshire County
Council’s Community Service and Winchester Area Community Action,
with additional funding from Awards for All Lottery grants. We look
forward to seeing you in Abbey Gardens. For more information, contact
Christopher Newberry on 01962 712858.
Have your say about getting more lottery grants for the arts
You may be aware that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
recently announced a consultation on the return of the lottery shares
to their original causes.
If agreed by Parliament, this would re-balance the share of the lottery,
restoring arts, heritage and sport shares to their original 20% each
by 2012.
This is a very positive move for the arts and Alan Davey, Chief Executive
of the Arts Council, would like to encourage you to respond to the
consultation document. It's vital that Government hears directly from
front line arts organisations about how the distinct benefits of additional
lottery funding would help you to deliver your work on the ground.
Your views are particularly valuable in light of the reductions to
public funding we know are coming in future years, and which will
make the lottery contribution to the arts all the more important.
Details of the consultation can be found on the DCMS website.
The consultation closes on 21 August.

Martin Read, Winchester based composer, has a new work being
performed in Basingstoke on 22nd and 23rd May
Martin Read’s Roundabout Basingstoke is being performed in and
around the Anvil, Basingstoke on Saturday 22nd May from 8pm and Sunday
23rd May from 3pm.
Roundabout Basingstoke is a community folk opera that tells the story
of pregnant young Polly's journey round the town’s ring road
as she tries to get to Winchester to have her baby. On her journey
she encounters a range of historical and fictional characters with
local connections, including Macheath from the Beggar’s Opera,
King Alfred, a political activist from the Civil War, and some Greenham
Common women, all of whom in some way hinder her progress. Polly is
accompanied on her journey by a cynical and sarcastic Prologue who
has plenty to say about bankers, shopping and the weather, and who
likes nothing better than to ridicule the audience. Each scene involves
at least one of the town's adult music making ensembles, including
the Basingstoke Choral Society, Basingstoke Concert Band, Basingstoke
Silver Band, Innovations Jazz Orchestra and the Tadley Band; rehearsals
have been going well.
Tickets are now on sale.

Invitation to LOCOG's London 2012 Open Weekend workshop at Turner
Sims, Southampton - Friday 26 March
If you've not been sure what the Cultural Olympiad Open Weekend
in July is all about or why it might be good for you to get involved,
do think about attending the workshop in Southampton on 26 March.
The workshop is one of only five in the country which LOCOG (the London
2012 team) is organising and we are lucky to have it right on our
doorstep in Southampton.
With speakers from LOCOG including Roli Barker, Open Weekend Project
Manager, Nikki Jones, Brand Executive and Amanda Kiely Sustainability
Project Manager, the day is an ideal opportunity to hear from people
at the heart of the London 2012 activity about their plans and how
we locally can get involved. I'd also suggest that the day is a key
opportunity for networking to see what scope there may be for collaborative
and/or complementary events to be planned for this July's Weekend
in the local area and further afield.

glass, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, engraving, calligraphy and sound
installations to offer a contemporary response to the idea of objects
with a spiritual and historical significance.
“If such a public building project as Hyde
Abbey was begun today how would contemporary artists respond to the
challenge? That was the question – and the challenge –
we put to our artists,” explained co-curator Sophie Cunningham
Dawe.
In their process of ‘re-imagining’ the artists explored
two central themes - locality and public memory, and the sacred and
the secular in contemporary society. The results are a very diverse
and superbly creative collection of work from over thirty local art
practitioners and artist groups.
“A number of the artists have received grants and funding from
the Arts Council and other sponsors for this show,” says co-curator
David Owen. “ We are delighted because we feel that it is a
real endorsement of the quality that they have produced.”
‘Re-imagining Treasures of Hyde Abbey’ is a keynote event
for Hyde900 (www.hyde900.org.uk), a community based celebration of
the 900th anniversary of the founding of Hyde Abbey, the final burial
place of King Alfred the Great
Please find attached
the Exhibition Events flyer. There's a great programme with artists'
and curators' talks, a forum, drop in and draw for kids in school
holidays, a french knitting workshop, artists at work, and Stephen
Cooper's site-specific installation at Hyde Abbey Gate.
Please go along and bring friends and family.

National Collecting Activity Survey 2010
The Art Fund is conducting a national survey to understand recent
collecting activity by UK museums and galleries, as well as other
issues vital to the sector. As a valued friend of The Art Fund, we
are very keen to get your feedback on these subjects.
This important survey will update The Art Fund’s previous research,
published in 2006, which highlighted the shortage of funds available
for acquisitions. This new research will explore how these issues
have developed since then, as well as looking at the challenges museums
face in the future. By donating your time to completing this survey
you will help to raise the profile of important issues affecting the
museum sector, which is particularly timely given the upcoming election.
Please find a link to the survey of museum’s collection activity
in the UK below:
Please click here
for the survey
The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The survey
will close on the 5th of March.
The survey focuses primarily on collecting activity but also covers
some more general questions about museum priorities and financial
issues. The Art Fund would greatly appreciate your assistance in providing
as full a response as possible to the survey. If you would like to
download a printable version of the survey questions please click
here
(although, please note, the survey must be completed using the link
above).
It is not necessary to complete the entire survey in one sitting.
If you need to close the window and return to the survey at a later
time, your responses will be saved.
If you do not feel you are best placed to answer this survey, could
you please forward this to a relevant colleague.
The results of the survey will be published in April, and we will
share the findings with all participants.
FreshMinds is an independent research consultancy which is managing
the survey on behalf of The Art Fund. If you have any questions at
all please contact the project manager at FreshMinds, Jamie Halliday
(by EMAIL or
on 020 7695 4180).
Thank you in advance for your time and for contributing to this important
research.
Achieving great art for everyone: a consultation
Firstly may I introduce myself to you. I am the new Director of Arts
Council England, South East. I would like to invite you to take part
in an important consultation which aims to identify the future priorities
for the arts.
The arts have flourished in the last 15 years, and there is now a
genuine acceptance that they are part of our fabric as a nation. We
want to build on that strength, but in our constantly changing environment,
we need to work together to achieve the very best for the arts and
opportunities to engage.
Earlier this month we launched our consultation - Achieving great
art for everyone – which sets out Arts Council England’s
understanding of the current landscape, celebrates the success of
the arts and identifies areas for the development over the next ten
years
We want to hear your thoughts on the way forward. Your views will
inform our long term strategic framework and our next set of investment
decisions.
To take part in the consultation, please visit HERE
The consultation will close on 14 April 2010.
We look forward to hearing your views - thank you for your contribution
in advance.

Winchester's Economic Strategy - have your say!
As the country climbs slowly out of recession and government spending
cuts are predicted with gloom, the people of the Winchester District
are helping to shape a rather more positive economic approach for
the next decade.
Local residents and businesses are now being invited to comment on
a draft economic strategy for the District which has been drawn together
after months of discussion, analysis and evidence-gathering. The document,
spanning ten years from 2010 to 2020, is available to view on the
City Council's website
and a printed copy is also available in the Council's customer service
centre on Colebrook Street. The Strategy includes several proposals
which will affect our Creative Industries infrastructure.
The consultation period lasts until 19 February 2010 and consists
of five key questions about the vision for the future economy of the
District and the way we will achieve this vision:
a) The Vision - Do you feel that the vision is appropriate and
powerful enough to drive the development of the economy of the District
over the next five years?
b) Themes and Trends - Do you feel that there are any important themes
or trends not represented or not adequately addressed?
c) Strategic Objectives - Are you able to support the key outcomes,
or would you like to suggest others that you believe to be more appropriate
to the development of prosperous economy in the Winchester District?
d) Action Plan - Can you propose any different or additional actions
in support of the outcomes, particularly actions on which you, your
business or your organisation can take a lead?
d) Measuring Progress - Efforts have been taken to ensure that most
of the actions listed are 'SMART' (specific, measurable, achievable,
realistic and timed). Other indicators have been given to help build
an overall 'direction of travel' for delivery of the strategy. Can
you suggest any other meaningful and cost-effective ways of measuring
progress?
Local business groups and other key stakeholders will be invited to
respond, but the Economic and Cultural Services Division of Winchester
City Council welcome feedback from any member of the public. To view
the document, go HERE
or telephone Economic Development Manager Kate Crawford on 01962 848

South Coast Design Forum
Getting to know you …. is the theme of the evening the South
Coast Design Forum is planning for the 10 th of February 2010 at Lawtons
in Southampton. We would like to invite SCDF members to showcase
their services, products, material etc to other SCDF members and to
the wider design network in the region. This will enable all of us
to get to know each other better, understand the work we all do and
thereby be able to talk intelligently to other people about our design
community. There will be a free bar including tea and coffee until
the budget runs out! This is an informal evening and the idea is to
bring in work that shows your talent and how you work. Space will
be limited so perhaps scanning your work into a laptop is good and
please, only bring 1 or 2 items. There is no format, showcase what
you want and how you want. First come first served!
Please register your interest now at pspence@scdf.org.uk and
we will keep you informed on timings etc. We want lots of you to attend,
if we get a good turnout our plan is to repeat the exercise and showcase
your skills to the wider business community later in the year.
Remember only SCDF members can showcase, but we’d like others
to come along and enjoy the experience; you never know you might feel
like joining SCDF!

Kings Sombourne Village Hall between January and March 2010. In doing
this Donna hopes to instil a sense of community for children and their
peers.
ArtSTART sessions work differently to most art clubs and workshops.
A variety of materials, equipment and activities are brought in and
laid out on different tables allowing children to try lots of different
things and join mini workshops at their own choice and in their own
time. Sessions and workshops are led by practicing artist, Donna Vokes.

News from the Badger Press - New team taking over
Angela, Jo, Nicola and Marcia are stepping down from
the management of the Badger Press at the end of January 2010. Time
and family commitments meant it was too difficult for them to continue.
The good news is that there is a new team taking over, who plan to
continue the Badger Press as an open access print studio with courses,
access and hire.
A message from the new team is attached.
Angela, Jo, Marcia and Nicola will all continue to be regular studio
users, and hope to see many of you. They also hope that Annet will
be back from time to time.

Informing our Future 2010
WE NEED YOUR HELP and 5 JUST FIVE MINUTES OF YOUR TIME!
Please accept our apologies if you have already received this email from another source but we are trying to maximise the number of responses by using as many agencies as possible to distribute the survey.
As part of the next issue of informing our future we want to examine the impact of the recession upon Hampshire's businesses. Our aim is to explore key questions such as: how is the recession impacting upon Hampshire's businesses? How are Hampshire's businesses attempting to deal with the recession? And what are their plans for the future?
In order to do this we need your assistance to gather up-to-date local information that is not available from normal data sources. Below is a link to a short on-line survey that aims to gather this vital information. The survey has been kept deliberately short and should take no more than 5 minutes of your time to complete. All individual information will be treated in confidence and only aggregated information will be presented in informing our future 2010.
To access the survey please click HERE
Please fill in the survey by 23 November. Thank you for your co-operation and time.

Wet Picnic - Play, Space and Creation Workshops
The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage Street , London E1 5LJ T. 020 7650 8749
Working with Artistic Director, Matt Feerick and Performer, Charlotte Dubery, the focus of these two weekend workshops will be on training as an ensemble through movement theatre, improvisation and devising based on the teachings of Jacques Lecoq.
Weekend 1 : Play - (10th & 11th October)
The first weekend will begin with silent psychological play as a neutral starting point from which the ensemble members can then work from. The company will then start to experiment during the movement and improvisation classes with the dynamics of nature through the exploration of materials, animals, natural elements, colours, lights and sounds which aims to develop the miming body and strengthen character acting. Performers are encouraged to look at the life surrounding them, to examine how it moves and in turn moves them and to explore how the life they find can be transposed into a universal theatrical language. The weekend will culminate in a devised performance.
Weekend 2 : Create - (24th & 25th October)
The second weekend will focus on the arts of music, painting, objects, poetry and text with the aim of developing the ensembles sense of rhythm during play and on stage as performers. The ensemble members will have the opportunity to put their previous explorations of nature into further practice as they work from the abstract and discover that sometimes the splats of paint that fall off the canvas onto the floor can be just as exciting as the painting itself. The company will learn to develop a shared sense of focus, rhythm and space as well as how to use these key theatrical skills in constructing and performing theatre and storytelling. The weekend will culminate in a devised performance.
1 weekend £75 / £65 (Student discount)
2 weekends £135 / £115 (Student discount)

Architectonics and Performance
Conversations with Rahma Khazam and Prof Oren Lieberman
Stripe Studio 2, University of Winchester
Wednesday, October 14th at 4.30 pm
In exploring ways that we might both borrow from architectural concepts to understand performance and performance making processes, and ways in which architecture can be performance (and vice versa), this first session brings together two figures who have undertaken unique explorations across how architecture and performance interface, with particular attention to two thematic areas: sound as architecture andarchitecture and performativity. Guest RAHMA KHAZAM will be discussing her experiences with exploring the relationship between sound art and the architectural, and her particular interest in approaching sound as architecture. Guest PROF OREN LIEBERMAN will be discussing his innovative work on the notion of radical spatial performativity and how, through actual transformation of spatial conditions, habitual and customary practices can be questioned and destabilised.
RSVP: Please contact Synne Behrndt if you would like to attend. The event is, of course, free, but we'd like to be prepared for numbers.
For more information on CRED , see www.expandeddramaturgies.com
Non-University guests will be met at Reception, King Alfred Campus, at 4.20pm and escorted to the (somewhat hard to find) room.

London 2012 Open Weekend (2010)
As many of you recover from this year's Heritage Open Days (thank you for participating!), we have just received the date for the 2010 Open Weekend which is the 'other' open weekend organised in support of the Cultural Olympiad each summer in the run up to London 2012.
River Park Leisure Centre led the way this year with a big 'Open Weekend' event for the cultural olympiad, and others such as City Mill and the Discovery Centre did their bit. I hope that next Open Weekend weekend Winchester will be able to live up to the standard set by Southampton this year with a really lively programme of interesting openings and (free) events around the District.
So please put 23 - 25 July in your diaries and include it as you plan events for next year... It's a great time to celebrate the cultural and sporting offer of Winchester, and there's still a chance to make money through merchandising or afternoon teas or donations even if the admission is free.

Opportunity: Artistic Assessors, Arts Council England
Arts Council England is recruiting 150 people with knowledge and understanding of the arts to write assessments of work by regularly funded organisations.
Further information and the application form are online at the Arts Council website
The deadline for applications is Friday 9 October.
This is the latest stage in the implementation of the self-assessment and peer review process, which was first put forward in the January 2008 McMaster report and was the subject of a major Arts Council consultation with the sector at the end of that year.
A pilot scheme was carried out in the South East and North West in spring 2009 and following revisions informed by the pilot, the new Artistic Assessment scheme will roll out across the country in January 2010.
The aim of artistic assessment is to provide a fair, robust and transparent platform for discussions about artistic quality and to develop over time a broader evidence base to inform our funding decisions. We expect assessments to play a full part in investment decisions by 2013/14.

DANCE UNITED: OCTOBER COURSE – HOW TO DELIVER DANCE IN SOCIAL INCLUSION SETTINGS
Dance United is running another training course in October (August training deadline passed) on How to deliver dance in Social Inclusion Settings. It would be good to have some local interest.
The main focus of this practical training course is the relationship between pro-active dance-based strategies that can be embedded in a dance methodology and re-active non-dance strategies that, together, can successfully resolve challenging behaviour, resistance and non-engagement within participant groups. The key questions revolve around:
• What is the relationship between ‘soft’ group management and ‘hard’ dance skills embedded within dance?
• What can you do when faced with challenge, confrontation and conflict?
• What lies beneath participants’ presenting behaviours?
• How can you decide whether behaviour is mildly, moderately or severely inappropriate and act accordingly?
• What makes challenging behaviour difficult to manage?
• How and why do particular strategies work?
Please find the application forms attached for the October training HERE. If you are successful we will notify you soon after the deadline, and the fee of £175 will be payable.

He delves into the quotations Johnson used to illustrate the entries, his beliefs, his prejudices and the wider culture of the time.
'Hitchings is clearly invigorated by words themselves and, like Johnson, his book urges the reader to re-engage with the vitality of the English language.' The Guardian

HER YELLOW WALLPAPER @ WINCHESTER DISCOVERY CENTRE
Thursday 2nd July - 7.30pm
Whilst seamlessly blending humour and melancholy, ShadyJane's Her Yellow Wallpaper captures the despondence of an isolated mind. This is the tale of a woman's descent into madness as her imagination revolts.

ShadyJane is an emerging new theatre maker, who utilises her five First Class female graduates from the University of Winchester's Drama Programme to combine poetry, autobiography, fiction and new writing, to bring a new lease of life to old texts. ShadyJane's style journeys through the natural, stylised, fragmented and physical, to represent rather than to show. This is literature - but not as you know it.

ENGLISH PROJECT AND WINCHESTER FESTIVAL SHAKESPEARE LECTURE
Book early for Shakespeare's Dramatic Language, a lecture by Stanley Wells, Sunday, 19 July, at 3.00 pm at the Winchester Theatre Royal
Sponsored by the University of Winchester
Shakespeare's Dramatic Language
This is the Inaugural Lecture in what is planned as an annual series on Great English-language Makers, presented in association with the English Project and the University of Winchester . Stanley Wells has devoted his life to the study of Shakespeare, on both the page and the stage. He is General Editor of the Oxford and the Penguin editions of Shakespeare, former Editor of the annual Shakespeare Survey for Cambridge University Press, and the author of several books on the playwright - from Shakespeare: A Dramatic Life to, most recently, Is It True What They Say About Shakespeare? He was Vice-Chairman of the RSC for many years, is now on the Board of Directors of the Globe Theatre, and the Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust at Stratford-upon-Avon.
Artistic Director John Miller says: "I am thrilled that this should be the first fruit of our discussions with the English Project and the University about how we might collaborate to our mutual advantage and that of our audience. We agreed that we should logically open the series with our greatest playwright, in this talk by his most knowledgeable interpreter. Professor Wells told me he was about to unveil the new Cobbe portrait of Shakespeare, and the huge flurry of interest in that event on TV and in the national press underlines his seminal influence on our language."
Professor Christopher Mulvey, Trustee of the English Project, says: "The Great Language Makers are the men and women who left our language different after they had done with it. No greater figure could be chosen than William Shakespeare to begin the series, and no more fitting person than Stanley Wells to give this lecture. The English Project is proud to sponsor this event in the company of the Winchester Festival and the University of Winchester ."
Professor Joy Carter, Vice-Chancellor, says: "On 19 July a great scholar will be celebrating our greatest writer. The University believes that this is an occasion that brings honour to all who are associated with it - the Winchester Festival, the English Project and the University itself. The people of Winchester will be uplifted."

MORTAL: EXHIBITION BY GILLIAN ROBERTSON: INVITATION TO PREVIEW,
SPITALFIELDS, 2 - 9 JUNE
This is the first showing of new paintings by UK artist Gillian
Robertson in an exhibition that includes work submitted for a PhD
award at Winchester School of Art last year.
In the past four years the work has explored the
dialogue between abstraction and the human figure in paintings inspired
by excavations and visits to archaeological sites including the
oldest known passage grave in Europe. In new work the body is explored
from a more personal perspective. Paintings from life alternate
with iconic images of the male form that disintegrate into landscape
and abstractions of colour. Transparent layers and swirls of paint
reveal details of landscapes left behind as the viewer is drawn
through surface graphics into the world of the paintings and into
images that mesmerise and disturb by turns. Image and painting practice
are intertwined, the one reflecting and guiding the other as the
finished pieces emerge.

PERMEATE
A new programme from Arts Council England, South East
Permeate aims to influence the make up of the
visual arts workforce to make it more reflective of the diversity
of British society and the UK workforce. Nationally Black and
minority ethnic people currently comprise 9.1% of the UK workforce,
but only 4.2% of the visual arts workforce in the SE. Disabled
people currently comprise 18.4% of the UK workforce but only 3.2%
of SE visual arts staff. The Permeate programme will address
this under representation by creating paid fellowships for individuals
in a variety of roles and levels. The intention is for skills
sharing and knowledge transfer between the organisations and individuals,
so that there is a subsequent cultural shift in the organisation as
well as increased visual arts sector employment potential for the
individuals. Organisations/individuals will come forward
to Grants for the Arts to part fund fellowships. There will
be additional support through a professional development programme.
It is hoped that the network created will support the individuals
long term in their careers. Permeate is supported by an external
advisory group who will support the development and content of the
programme, and work directly as mentors with individual projects/fellows.
The programme will be managed by a Co-ordinator, based at Fabrica,
who is being recruited now. There is a
target of at least 6 fellowships. Fellowships must be
hosted by organisations which are either visual arts based, or which
use visual arts in their work (this could include community organisations,
arts centres and melas for example). Fellowships can start at
any time from June 2009 but must all finish by March 2011. Fellowships
can vary in length from 3 months upwards, and could be full or part
time. For more details in the first instance please contact
